Real Snow, Fake Tree
Back to the seasonal stuff.   This image is from the tree right outside my garage door.  It looked just like this until a few days ago when all the snow melted, the rains came and flooded everything out and was subsequently dried up by the fifty mile an hour winds. Ahh the joys of weather in Western New York. …

Quotation by Zalman Stern Another trip back to this past Autumn. This is a Macro I shot with my reversed 50mm of a fire bush leaf. I really love Macro photography. It’s another world. …

The Story Continues
An image from last weekend’s snow storm.  This is the Mill Creek along Holt Road in Webster.   The Willow Trees and grasses prevent you from looking at this scene in the summer time, so I forget it’s here even though I cross it at least twice a day. The snow was fresh last weekend, but it’s melting today, and if it rains like they predicted we may even be seeing grass in the...

Who are you?
The season is catching up with me and all the time I used to spend taking and processing photos seems to have dissappeared in a pile of wrapping paper, scotch tape, and last minute shopping…   C’est la guerre. So it’s back into the Zooomr archive for me, this one from last fall (obviously).  A bed of autumn leaves fallen by the Genesee River Gorge in Lowerfalls park. ...

Life on Mill Street, 12/19/2008
A shot from the First of two snow storms to hit the Rochester area this weekend.  This was last Friday about 2pm. It’s actually not that different from what it looks like right now, except there are now mounds of plowed snow everywhere.   But it’s still coming down, we are in the middle of winter storm number two right now. The one good thing about this is it pretty much gaurentees...

Beyond Jurisdiction
I tried to bring out the snowflakes against the grey sky without introducing more grain to the image.   I think I did it but it leaves a pretty stark image of this Lake Avenue traffic light. …

The Guitar
Something a bit more abstract for your visual enjoyment today. This was an experiment in long exposures and lots of camera movement.  Was taken in side my car, at night, the different colors are from my dashboard, I think.  The bright white streaks are from another car’s headlights, I think. I really enjoy making these abstracts images.  Very few of them turn out to be something I would...

Real Time
Today’s image is a throw back to autumn.  No not summer, but fall.  This was taken in October,  I took the day off to spend time with the family.  For a bit of adventure we headed out to Penfield, NY’s Thousand Acre Swamp. This flower, a member of the thistle family I think, was still on display, and even curled a few petals just to show off. It’s been cold a grey here for a...

There is always one
Part of a seasonal snowflake decoration in downtown Rochester, NY. No matter how hard you try, there is alwaqys one light out in almost any holiday decoration or more than ten lights.   It happens at home, as well as here. Thank goodness that no longer stops the rest of the lights from comming on. …

Unable to contain
A friend of mine on Zooomr said “It’s like a being in a snow globe.” That made me smile, but in reality it’s just part of life up north.  But perhaps that would have made a better title for the image.  ;-) …

Old St. Nick
A rare photo of the real Santa Clause as he visits the Webster Fire Department’s annual Family Christmas party. It was a bitter cold day, which worked well because Santa was able to land his sleigh at the Fire Department and ride in on a fire truck.   The Kids inside got to decorate cookies, play games, and get balloon candy canes while they waited. Once Santa and Mrs Clause made an...

Little Green Soldier
Green Apples, on a checkerboard.   A normal thing in any one’s house, right?   Well it’s normal at my in-laws.   Although I can’t really pick on them too much, I bought them this checkerboard set many years ago. It’s really a wonderful piece, red apples on one side, green on the other.  You can even king the “checkers” because the apples do stack, using the stems for stability. I shot the red...

Fabricating Hope
Hope is one of those things where it doesn’t really matter how it got there, it’s just good to have it around.   Christmas is like that.  Fake snow, plastic trees, and electric lights are a long way away from the traditional celebration involving the winter solstice, and real candles in pine trees, but all the same, it brings a smile to a child and puts a twinkle in your eye. ...

Ready but not yet willing
I went out to shoot the village Christmas decorations on the November 30th, but of course they don’t actually turn them on until the 1st. C’est La Guerre. Now I’ll have to find a snowy night to go out and try again. …

Reconciliation
Another older shot, this time going back to July of this year.   I had a bunch of old Cokin filters from back in my film days, and I tracked down some adapter rings to get them on the new gear. This was shot with Cokin’s Star filter.  Thats what created the dramatic rays of light that seem to shoot across the sky in this shot.  Very little post processing was done here. …

Sizzle
Another throw back to summer.  This time July 4th.   Although this isn’t my highest rated fireworks picture on Zooomr, it is my personal favorite.   I didn’t take the effort to get all my gear out for these, so belive it or not this was a hand held shot, using my 18-55 Image Stabilizing lens. The Fireworks are going off behind Irondequoit town hall, on the north side of Rochester,...

Red Hook
We are going back into the archives today.  This is one of my favorite shots from last March.   We got a break in the winter weather and I took advantage by photowalking around where I work. This hook was just suspended from the roof, for no apparent reason, I shot it with my old Canon S3 IS, which did a nice job of focus with a very narrow depth of field.   Man that was a great little...

Fearing Nothing
I took advantage of a little bit of sunshine yesterday and found this tree still full of leaves.   I’m not sure what kind of tree it is, Oak maybe, but the entire tree was full of leaves that had turned but not dropped. I like the leather like texture on them and tried to capture that in this image. …

Otto
Otto, is one of a small collection of mini gargoyles my wife and I have been collecting for quite a few years now. I think as the weather turns grey and bleak here in Western NY, I will be doing more work with my light box.  One of my projects will be to document these little characters, and try to draw out their personality. Otto seems to be ready for some great reward.   What do you think? ...

Ignoring all of you
The first day of December and we’ll kick it off with a stark, bleak, grey, photo. Well, at least it’s not snow! Tis the season for me to start looking inward for photo insperation. Inside my house at least. This still life was shot in my basement studio. (and by studio I mean my home made light box on my old drafing table) Small things around the house make great macro and...
